What I love about our home.
I love living in the middle so such beauty and the proximity to Appalachian Trail, James River, Peaks of
Otter and the Blue Ridge Parkway, which is our main route to run our errands. I love the show Mother
Nature puts on for us each and every day that we can view from any room in the house or relaxing on
the front porch. Whether it is a perfectly sunny day or a rainy, snowy one, the dance performed by the
clouds dipping down into the valley and swirling over and around the mountain tops is truly spectacular
and awe-inspiring. I love sitting in my favorite “room” in the house, the timber framed front porch at
the end of the day and watching the Western sky change from yellow to orange to purple to inly blue as
the sun slowly drop behind the mountains. As we watch the sun set behind the mountains at the end of
the day the word “paradise” comes to mind. I love sitting in the fire pit under the Milky Way, watching
the moon and Venus rise above the mountains to the East and counting shooting stars. And every
Spring brings new families of deer, wild turkey, young hawks and many varieties of birds to our pasture
and surrounding hillsides.
I love that we were able to find a very special builder that helped us to build a home that honors and
respects the heritage of the hills and takes full advantage of the very special location in Goose Creek
Valley. Inspired by the architects Greene and Greene, our builder designed a craftsman style, passive
solar home that takes advantage of the gift of free energy provided by a perfect southern exposure
while allowing the scenery to become the artwork that adorns our home. We have long admired homes
New Mexico and Italy that just seemed to be a part of their surroundings, we knew we wanted our
home to blend into and become part of the landscape.
Even though we have a deep connection to the aesthetic of our home, it is truly a very practical home.
We built this home where we could age-in-place . After living in a large home in Northern Virginia, we
knew that we wanted escape the rat race and scale back a bit. Using Sarah Susanka’s not-so-big
approach, our goal was to design an efficiently organized home where we could age gracefully in place.
The main level offers everything needed for daily life with the second floor reserved for guests and
friends when they visit. There is not one step on the first floor not even to enter the walk-in shower and
all of the doors are 36” wide should wheelchair assistance be needed sometime down the road. We
designed the kitchen to be the heart of the home. Our kitchen and pantry is the result of what I learned
from living in eleven different kitchens. Our family enjoys cooking together and there is enough space
for everyone to work in the kitchen together. The 12-foot island allows the cooks and guests to visit
while meals are prepared. The eight sets of cabinets below the island provide some of my favorite
storage in the house. I love the easy access from the kitchen to our favorite “room” for entertaining, the
outdoor patio that stretches across the front of the house! I love the huge pantry where we can store
the bounty we preserve from our garden. Other favorite features include the washer and dryer located
in the master closet and the master bathroom’s walk-in slate shower, complete with fossils hiding in the
rock. I love the huge organic garden where we have grown all of our own vegetables and the two-story
barn conveniently located next to the garden to store our tools. I love our awesome, friendly neighbors
and our local farmer that supplies all of our meat and eggs.
And finally, I love how energy efficiency of our home’s passive solar design and solar radiant floor heat. I
love the fact that we stay toasty warm all winter in spite of never once having turned on our heat pump.
Thanks to the homes design and cool stained cement floors and countertops, ceiling fans, deep eaves
and the vine covered pergola, we stay cool on warm days and do not have to turn the AC as soon as our
neighbors. And, I love our delicious well water that comes from deep within the earth. You can’t find
clean, clear water like this in many places.
They truly HATE that they have to move , but need to be closer to family.
